Core TechnologyPeptides are small proteins. More than 400 antimicrobial peptides have been discovered in nature. They function as part of the immune systems of animals, insects and plants. These new drugs may be a powerful new tool to combat bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Generally, the peptides bind to and kill harmful microorganisms. Demegen’s peptide portfolio includes a family of peptides derived from naturally occurring peptides found in human saliva, called "histatins" which play a role in the body's natural defense against disease. In addition, the portfolio includes two de novo synthetic classes that have demonstrated good activity against pathogens along with low toxicity. Demegen's proprietary technology platform includes 19 issued United States patents, plus many foreign counterparts. The patents include composition of matter protection. There is an important need for new drugs in the antibiotic market because resistance has developed to many current therapies. Demegen compounds have demonstrated the capability to destroy most bacteria, including those that are resistant to current antibiotics. Demegen's peptide technology may also be used to prevent serious damage to crops caused by fungal and bacterial diseases. Demegen's capability and patent position with regards to these kinds of diseases is significantly different than engineered crops being developed by others.
